Wanneroo volunteers battle Broome blaze

Wednesday, 21 October 2009

Four City of Wanneroo volunteer fire fighters who were deployed to Broome last week to help battle the raging fires have returned home, with the blaze now under control.

Daniel Petty, Peter Williams, Glenn McLaren and Dave Brennen, all from the Wanneroo Bushfire Brigade, returned to Perth at 10pm on Sunday after four days in Broome.

Mike Teraci, Fire and Emergency Services Authority Acting District Manager for Perth North Coastal said the four men were among 10 fire fighters sent from Perth to assist with fire fighting operations.

“Our volunteers were fighting the fire in very hot, windy conditions and working 12 to 14 hour shifts,” he said. “We are very proud of their efforts, and the response from the many others who volunteered their services to go to Broome.”

City of Wanneroo Chief Executive Officer Daniel Simms said the City had a long history of supporting deployments, both within WA and interstate.

“Earlier this year Mike Teraci went to the Victorian bushfires and our Acting Community Fire Manager Darragh Wills helped out at the 1994 bushfires in New South Wales,” he said. “The four men who volunteered their time to go to Broome did us proud, and the City will continue to offer our support when needed.”
