Teeing off for a good cause

Friday, 23 October 2009

The City of Wanneroo has again shown its support for chaplaincy programs in local State high schools, with $41,000 raised at the 2009 Charity Golf Day.

Clarkson Community High School, Girrawheen Senior High School, Mindarie Senior College, Wanneroo Senior High School and Yanchep District High School will each receive more than $8000

Thirty teams, made up of generous sponsors from Perth businesses, took part in the annual Charity Golf Day last Thursday (22 October), held at the City of Wanneroo’s Carramar Golf Course.

Mayor Jon Kelly said the annual fundraiser grew bigger and better each year.

“While we all have a lot of fun out on the golf course, there is a serious side to the day,” Mayor Kelly said. “Everyone involved is working towards ensuring chaplaincy services are available in our local public schools, and it is wonderful that so many local sponsors support this important goal.”

The City of Wanneroo held its first Charity Golf Day in 2001, when State schools within the City were at risk of losing their chaplaincy services.

In that time almost $300,000 has been raised to ensure this invaluable community service continues.

“It is reassuring to know that many of the chaplain positions have been secured thanks to funding such as this,” Mayor Kelly said. “It is so important for young people to have a positive relationship with an adult that they can trust, as teenage years can often be tough for adolescents.

“A school chaplain is a mentor to so many people, and their support is extended to the families as well as the teenager.”
