Petitions

Petitions are one of the traditional processes by which an individual can directly place grievances before Council. Any petition received by the City is presented to the next Ordinary Council Meeting prior to actioning. If you wish to submit a petition please click to download a Petition Template form. The content should include the following:-

  • The petition to be addressed to the Mayor.
  • As far as practicable to be prepared in the form prescribed.
  • Be made by electors of the district.
  • Each page of signatures to be headed with the words of the request.
  • The opening paragraphs of the petition (containing the preamble, petitioners, grievance and request) may be written, typed or printed. Every signature must be original hand-writing, and signatures must not be pasted on, photocopied or transferred in any other way.
  • The petition must be legible and contain no alterations.
  • Contain the names, addresses and signatures of the electors making the request and the date each elector signed.
  • State the name of the person upon whom, and an address at which, notice to the petitioners can be given.
  • Be in the form prescribed by the Act and Local Government (Constitution) Regulations 1996 if it is a proposal to change the method of filling the office of mayor; a proposal to create a new district or the boundaries of the local government; a request for a poll on a recommended amalgamation; or a submission about changes to wards, the name of a district or ward or the number of councillors for a district or ward.
