The roof cover is now complete on the new City of Wanneroo supported EcoVision sustainable demonstration homes in Tapping.
The two homes are a joint venture between the City of Wanneroo and Cedar Woods Properties and are being built by Benchmark Designer Homes, with architectural services provided by Arcologic Design.
Wanneroo Mayor John Kelly said when complete, the two homes would provide a showcase for environmental sustainability through the inclusion of 8 star passive solar design principles coupled with energy efficiency and water minimisation features.
“The City is committed to promoting sustainability within the region and these homes provide practical examples for new home builders considering environmental practices,” he said.
“The homes are expected to be complete in September 2011 and home buyers, renovators and other interested parties will be able to take free tours of the homes to experience sustainability in action.
“The homes include eco friendly fixtures and fittings such as bamboo floors, insulated cavity bricks, photovoltaic cells, rainwater tanks and a grey water system that utilises waste water from the laundry and bathroom to water the garden,” he said.
The insulation being fitted into the cavity walls and roofs of both homes and will reduce the need for artificial heating and cooling.
The demonstration homes will feature:
- Passive solar design;
- Water conservation and reuse;
- Energy conservation through careful design and alternative energy sources;
- Environmentally sensitive materials;
- Low embodied energy;
- Low allergen design considerations;
- Multifunctional living design; and
- Waste minimisation.
Cedar Woods’ WA State Manager Stuart Duplock said the homes are a perfect fit with the company’s commitment to incorporating sustainability initiatives throughout each of their developments as well as offering affordable housing solutions.
Once complete, community education sessions such as Great Gardens Workshops will be available from the homes and will engage people on a range of sustainability issues.
The project has attracted a number of high profile business sponsors who will display their products within the homes.
