Wanneroo Awarded for Biodiversity
Monday, 31 August 2009
Coastal Ward Councillor Tracey Roberts accepts the biodiversity conservation award from farmer and author Peter Andrews
The City of Wanneroo has been recognised for its efforts in biodiversity conservation by the WA Local Government Association’s (WALGA) Perth Biodiversity Project.
Councillor Tracey Roberts accepted the award on behalf of the City earlier this month, at the Local Government Convention 2009, held at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.
The City received the milestone award for "preparing and endorsing for public consultation a local biodiversity strategy discussion paper".
Mayor Jon Kelly said the City was currently completing its Local Biodiversity Strategy, which aims to recognise the City’s existing and ongoing biodiversity conservation initiatives.
“Biodiversity conservation in the City includes maintenance of the City's conservation reserves; education programs such as Adopt a Bushland; and environmental assessments during planning and development,” he said.
“New projects will also be proposed to increase biodiversity conservation initiatives in the City's day-to-day business.
”The City has worked hard to introduce measures to conserve local biodiversity, and it is pleasing to see these endeavors recognised.”
Mayor Kelly added that although the City of Wanneroo faced many challenges with the demand for urban growth and development, it was working hard to protect, manage and enhance its natural assets.
The draft was released in October 2008 for public comment, and the final Local Biodiversity Strategy document is expected to go to Council later this year, for endorsement.
Artwork marks the beginning of a new era for Wanneroo

Perth artist Rick Vermey created all of the artwork at the new Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre
The finishing touches are being carried out at the new Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre, including the installation of several atworks.
The artworks are by Perth artist Rick Vermey.
The sculptures in the Great Court are a series of three aluminium figures that will be suspended from the first floor. The Great Court sculptures symbolise Wanneroo's agricultural history and progressive future. The three sculptures are collectively titled ‘Seed, Fruit and Flower’.
The second artwork is a unique interactive donations box to be placed at the Museum. The box interacts with visitors, inviting participation by performing a range of entertaining events, determined by the currency contributed. This artwork is significant to Wanneroo, as it features a kangaroo paw and gardener watering a quirky garden.
Fellow artist Phil Gamblen and electrical programmer Peter Gee assisted with mechanical and electronic design aspects of the donations box.
Other artwork featured in the building, include the ‘teen screen’, with education and technology motifs, and the spectacular children’s artwork in the Library, titled ‘Seed Cloud’.
Wanneroo Mayor Jon Kelly said the artist had created pieces that truly embodied the spirit of the City of Wanneroo.
“The $18.5 million Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre is one of the highlights of the Town Centre Revitalisation – and the first of its kind in Western Australia to house this range of cultural services,” Mayor Kelly said.
“This Library and Cultural Centre promises to be a hub of activity and entertainment for the whole City to enjoy, and it is great to see the final stages being put together.”
The building is set to open to the public on Monday, September 7 and will feature a library, regional museum, exhibition gallery, community function space, lecture theatre and coffee shop.
The Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre is a Wanneroo Town Centre Revitalisation Partnership project of the City of Wanneroo and the Government of Western Australia.

Ranger to the Rescue
Wednesday, 5 August 2009
City of Wanneroo ranger Paul Di Girolami has been hailed a “lifesaver” by his work colleagues and Mayor Jon Kelly, after coming to the aid of a five-year-old girl who was hit by a car in Marangaroo.
On Monday evening (27 July), Mr Di Girolami was patrolling Marangaroo Drive, near Mirrabooka Avenue when he noticed several cars stopped on the road.
“I got out of my car and I saw this little body on the road – she was tiny,” he said.
Mr Di Girolami acted immediately, asking people to call emergency services while checking the little girl. He realised that she had no pulse and placed her in the recovery position, and as he was about to start CPR he felt a pulse return, and she eventually began breathing.
“I was so relieved when I heard her gasp – I then just tried to keep her breathing, and her pulse eventually became stronger,” he said.
“But it was a real group effort, a lady was keeping her warm with a blanket, someone rang the ambulance, another person was comforting her mum and then a doctor arrived.” Mr Di Girolami then left the girl in the safe hands of the doctor and began controlling the traffic, which was at a standstill, until police arrived. “It was a huge relief for me to have help in assisting the girl, it was a real community effort – everyone pitched in where they could,” he said.
“I didn’t really think about it (the seriousness of the accident) until afterwards – I have a niece the same age and I have two girls myself, so it’s scary to think what could have happened if people weren’t there to help straight away.”
Mayor Jon Kelly presented Mr Di Girolami with a certificate of recognition for his service, and said the City was extremely proud of him.
“Paul truly helped to save the life of this little girl, while doing his daily job,” Mayor Kelly said. “All of our rangers are trained in Senior First Aid, and have a vast range of experience which gives them the ability to take control in emergency situations similar to this.
“The City and the community are lucky to have Rangers like Paul watching out for us.” Mr Di Girolami, who has been a City of Wanneroo ranger for eight years, said there was more to the job than just issuing parking infringements.
“When you are in a uniform people expect a lot, and we deliver,” he said. “Attending to injured people and accidents is all just a part the job.”
