Call for input on local tourism

Monday, 14 Feb 2011
Tourism operators and residents will be able to have their say on how to improve the tourism industry within the City of Wanneroo.

The City of Wanneroo has appointed Kirkgate Consulting to undertake a full review of its previous tourism strategy, 'Tourism Wanneroo 2004 - 2008'.

With substantial changes to the economy, the demographics of the City and the local environment, it is critical to review the success of the Wanneroo Tourism Strategy and define the position of tourism in the City of Wanneroo for the future.

Kirkgate Consulting has a solid background in the tourism industry, and has recently completed a tourism strategy for the City of Armadale, which has a mix of rural and urban areas and a strong sense of history, as Wanneroo does.

Wanneroo Mayor Jon Kelly the City of Wanneroo was one of the fastest growing local government areas in Australia and had a lot of tourism potential that should be explored.

"The review of the strategy coincides perfectly at a time when strategic areas, such as Alkimos and Eglinton are going to be developed," Mayor Kelly said.

Tourism operators are invited to share their thoughts at a workshop on 8 March at the Wanneroo Civic Centre. The workshop will explore the possible challenges, as well as the opportunities to grow and improve the local tourism industry.

Call the Business Development Team on 9405 5000 to register your interest in attending this workshop. Places are limited and registration is essential.

Residents are also invited to have their say on the online survey available on wanneroo.wa.gov.au. Many tourists to the area are visiting friends and relatives that live in the region, so it is important that residents' expectations and needs are understood.

The final outcome is expected to be a workable document that local tourism operators and residents can easily refer to.
