Mayor Jon Kelly has congratulated City of Wanneroo library staff for winning the Inaugural Library Board of Western Australia’s ‘Award for Excellence’ at a formal presentation ceremony last week.
“The Award recognises excellent achievement in the provision of library services – and it’s terrific that the City of Wanneroo has been recognised in this way,” said Mayor Kelly.
As well as commending City of Wanneroo Library Services as a leader in public libraries across WA, the Library Board presented the City with a cheque for $5000.
The Award recognises the extent of the project, the audience it reaches, innovation, evaluation, collaboration with different groups, education or training aspects and contribution to professional organisations.
The City of Wanneroo Library Service nominated its innovative Books in a Bag Service which actively supports local book clubs through easy access to book club kits.
The kits contain multiple copies of selected titles, an audio book where available and a resource sheet that contains discussion questions as well as further information about the author and the book.
The programme which started in 2004, currently charges $100 for the program which has more than 69 clubs, 150 titles and 1500 books to manage.
By providing a convenient and comprehensive service, “Books in a Bag” has reduced the barriers involved in starting and maintaining a book club, encouraging residents to share the experience of reading.
It provides a visible example of the City’s commitment to engaging with and building the capacity of the local community.
“Delivery of the program has been a team effort by Wanneroo Library Services and it is pleasing that this hard work has been acknowledged at the highest level and has helped to ‘crown’ Wanneroo Library Services as among the best in WA,” said Mayor Kelly.
