Clarkson resident overall winner of Art Awards

Monday, 23 May 2011
Northern suburbs artists were the big winners at the City of Wanneroo’s 10th – and richest - Art Awards, at the official opening of the exhibition on Friday night.

Clarkson resident Janey Emery won the City of Wanneroo Open Award, taking home $5000 for her oil painting titled Back Off.

Judges said the work displayed a confidently executed narrative of urban culture and environment, which instantly engages the audience.

The other major prize category was for the Best City of Wanneroo resident, with $1500 awarded to Butler resident Christopher Young for his light-jet print.

Wanneroo Mayor Jon Kelly said with $12,000 worth of prizes, this was the richest art awards the City had held.

“This year the City received more than 260 entries from artists across Western Australia, and one third of them were from City of Wanneroo residents,” Mayor Kelly said.

“This is the second year the City has held these prestigious awards at the purpose built exhibition gallery at the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre, which is proving to be the cultural hub of the City.”
