Fire safety for all Wanneroo Residents

Thursday, 27 Oct 2011
With summer fast approaching the City of Wanneroo is reminding residents and property owners to prepare their homes for the bushfire season.

Firebreaks must be cleared by 15 November and maintained until next April, with Rangers and Fire Control Officers carrying out inspections on all vacant urban land and rural properties during this time.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said now is the time to prepare for bushfires.

“Bushfire safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Mayor Roberts said. “Although Perth has experienced a relatively wet October, this will only aid the growth of vegetation so it is important to get on top of it now, ahead of summer.

“The City is running a safety campaign to remind residents of fire danger through flashing road signs, advertisements, website information and updates on Facebook and Twitter.”

Residents with gas cylinders also need to prepare. Ensure the pressure relief valve is directed away from the house and store gas cylinders upright, securing them with a metal chain to a stable, non-combustible post to prevent cylinders from falling over.

Energy Safety WA (Gas Technical Regulatory Council) has also provided bushfire safety tips designed to stop gas bottles exploding if there is a fire:

What to do with an LP Gas bottle or cylinder before evacuating:

  • Turn it off at valve on top of the bottle
  • Leave the bottle or cylinder where it has been installed
  • Leave the bottle or cylinder in an upright position
  • Ensure it is secured to a solid structure and on a solid base to prevent it falling over, with the vent facing away from buildings
  • Place LP Gas bottles/cylinders attached to a wooden framed BBQ on a solid base
  • Remove any combustible materials surrounding the bottle

What not to do with an LP Gas bottle or cylinder before evacuating:

  • Never place it inside a house or structure during a fire
  • Never lay it on its side
  • Never cover it with wet material to it keep cool – these materials may dry out and burn, heating the bottle/cylinder
