Girrawheen Library breaks down language barriers

Tuesday, 30 Aug 2011
Girrawheen Library will be hosting International English Language Testing System (IELTS) workshops this month, providing participants with an overview of the exam.

Listening, reading, writing and speaking will be the focus of the workshops, with tips and practice sessions for the exam, which migrants take for education, immigration and professional accreditation.

The workshops are ideal for a Library that has been catering for a high migrant population living locally, with a large collection of books for both adults and children in 32 different languages – from Afrikaans to Urdu – including a Vietnamese collection with about 1700 items.

The library also has a large collection of books, audio and multimedia items for English language learners, including titles specifically aimed at IELTS study.

As a further support to people learning English, City of Wanneroo libraries also host English Conversation Groups for adults who wish to improve their English in a friendly and informal setting.

In Girrawheen, the groups meet on Tuesdays from 6.30pm - 8pm and on Thursdays from 9.30am - 11am. Conversation groups also run at Wanneroo and Clarkson Libraries.
