Protecting our Dunes

Thursday, 15 Sep 2011
City of Wanneroo Rangers are carrying out regular targeted patrols to deter illegal vehicle activity at foreshores, beaches and parks.

In particular, Rangers are patrolling dunes along Marmion Avenue, between Butler and Yanchep, including areas of privately-owned land.

Police are also aware of the illegal activity and will be assisting with some of the patrols.

Residents are reminded that all off-road vehicles must be registered, and renewals should take place by 30 September.

Off road vehicles are only allowed in permitted areas, which include:

  • Pinjar Road - corner Pinjar Road and Wattle Avenue, Pinjar.
  • Centre Ways (off Gnangara Road) – Lexia and Pines area
  • Ledge Point
  • Lancelin

“While off-road vehicles such as motorbikes and four-wheel-drives are great fun, if used inappropriately they can damage environmentally sensitive areas, such as beaches and sand dunes,” Mayor Jon Kelly said.

“If you use a permitted area, make sure you keep to the track and leave the area as you find it.”

The City is also investigating other measures such as the installation of signage to keep dunes safe from the damage of off-road vehicles.

All City operational vehicles now also have distinctive Eyes on the Street branding, which is part of a new program strengthening the City’s commitment to delivering a safer community.
