Wanneroo hosts biggest Aus Day Ceremony in WA

Thursday, 19 Jan 2012
More than 450 people will become Australian citizens at the City of Wanneroo’s Australia Day citizenship ceremony, making it the biggest in Western Australia on January 26.

From Iran to Zambia, Japan to Finland, Chile to Kenya and everywhere in between, the new citizens are from 53 different countries, with the majority from the United Kingdom.

The new Aussies and more than 500 of their guests will be treated to an array of entertainment at the Wanneroo Showgrounds, with face-painting, stilt-walkers, live music, and a barbeque breakfast all prior to the ceremony.

With the highlight of the day undoubtedly the special moment the citizens make their pledge, the ceremony will also include the presentation of the City of Wanneroo Australia Day Awards.

Television personality Lachy Reid will MC the event, and the crowd will hear from guest speaker, Perth Paralympic swimmer Priya Cooper, who represented her country numerous times.

Mayor Tracey Roberts will conduct the preamble to the citizenship pledge, and the Lake Joondalup Lifestyle Village Choir will lead the crowd in singing the National Anthem for the first time as Australian citizens, as well as performing a medley of Australian songs.
