The $50,000 Koondoola Regional Bushland, Sensory Interpretive Walk Trail was officially opened this morning, allowing people of all abilities to experience the sights and sounds of the local environment.

The trail, made possible through a grant from the Department of Environment and Conservation, can be accessed by people of all abilities with a wheelchair-friendly bitumen pathway.

The trail is also interactive, teaching those using the trail about the unique flora and fauna living in the bushland through senses such as touch, smell and sight.

Students from the nearby Burbridge School, which caters for children with disabilities, attended the launch, helping Deputy Mayor and South Ward Councillor Brett Treby cut the ribbon to officially open the trail.

Deputy Mayor Treby said the Sensory Walk Trail would provide an interactive environmental education experience for children from all local schools.

“The Koondoola Regional Bushland is 137 hectares of natural beauty, with more than 270 native plant species,” Deputy Mayor Treby said. “For these reasons it is a must see for people of all ages and abilities, and now everyone can enjoy the remarkable wildlife that the Koondoola Regional Bushland is home to.

“Council is committed to ensuring all of our community members have proper access to services and facilities in our City, and this is yet another example of that.”

Members of the Friends of Koondoola Regional Bushland were on hand to lead a guided tour along the trail for guests.
