An environmental objective of the City of Wanneroo is to:”minimise the incidence and impact of pollution”. One of the strategies to achieve this objective is through the participation of the Cities for Climate Protection program (CCP).
The City joined the ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability in 2003 and has since set greenhouse reduction goals of 25% for the corporate sector and 20% for the community sector by 2012.
The City has implemented a number of greenhouse saving actions since joining the program, including:
- Energy efficiency upgrades to seven of Council’s buildings, resulting in savings of 5.58 tonnes of CO2 per year
- Bore pump replacement program with annual greenhouse savings of 126 tonnes of CO2 per year
- Electricity production of 5MW per year through methane extraction at Tamala Park landfill
- The purchase of a hybrid (petrol/electric) vehicle, LPG conversions of fleet vehicles and biofuel trial for Council’s heavy fleet and Numerous community education and awareness raising inititatives on energy efficiency and climate change issues.
The City developed a new Energy Action Plan.pdf in 2007, which sets out 44 actions to assist Council to reach its greenhouse reduction goals for the corporate, and community sectors.
The City has progressed through the first five Milestones of the CCP program and is currently progressing through the Cities for Climate Protection Plus program which consists of the following stages:
- Organisational Review
- Monitoring and Review
- Advancing Action Area
The City is currently participating in a Sustainable Purchasing Advancing Action project and has recently endorsed a Green Purchasing Action Plan.pdf that will assist Council to consider the environment in all purchasing decisions.
