Reconciliation Action Plan

The City of Wanneroo is developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) based on projects and actions that help build better relationships and show respect for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. One of the key aims of Reconciliation Action Plans is to help address the inequalities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and to help close the 17 year gap in life expectancy between  children of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent and other Australian children.

Each organisation and corporate body that develops a Reconciliation Action Plan is asked to develop goals and actions within three Pillars of the RAP:

  • Respect, for culture, land and history of the Traditional Owners of the Land, especially the “Wadjuk”  People of the local Wanneroo area, which lies within Noongar country.
  • Relationships, that build on communication and engagement in decision-making.
  • Opportunities, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gain education, employment and skills through initiatives such as traineeships and recognition of academic excellence.

Community gatherings in May 2011 began the community consultation process and the RAP Working Group was formed in July 2011.  This group is voluntary and includes local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Council staff and Elected Members who have an interest in Reconciliation and in working towards change within our community.

Public consultation starts 24.2.2012 and end 5pm 16.3.2012.
