Noongar Pop Culture

Following on from the success of the Noongar Pop Culture language revival project, comes Noongar Pop Culture 2.

CAN WA has again teamed up with Narrogin Senior High School to deliver an innovative community art exhibition of bespoke fashion garments and photographs designed and created by Noongar girls in years 8-10.

The project used teenage girls’ love of fashion and clothes to introduce them to new skills by intertwining cultural traditions with contemporary craftwork. Over six weeks the girls learnt weaving skills from Noongar artist Sharyn Egan, up-cycling tips from Lady Bananas, style advice from designer Elisha Quintal and the art of eco-dyeing from Noongar artists Marcelle Riley and Geri, utilising these techniques to create their own bespoke garments and accessories. The final result was documented by photographer Simon Pynt, assisted by choreographer Sete Tele who challenged the girls to step out of their comfort zone while modelling their pieces.
