Volunteer charity workshop leader a champion for seniors

Published Thursday, 8th October 2015

Charity worker Brother Olly Pickett has been honoured at the 2015 Seniors Awards for his work at the Wangara workshop 'Wheelchairs for Kids'.

Seniors awards
Brother Pickett was awarded the Juniper Champion for Seniors category for 17 years of
leading a team of volunteers to build wheelchairs for children from developing countries.

The workshop, which is largely run by retired volunteers, produces and distributes up to 300
wheelchairs per month, and operates by donations. The workshop’s success in securing
funds is largely driven by the fact that donations are not used for administration costs,
salaried employees or vehicles.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the award was well deserved by Brother
Pickett, who was a positive role model for other seniors in the community.

“Brother Olly is a true champion for seniors – you only have to see the countless hours he
has contributed to this excellent cause to understand the extent of his leadership and
dedication to the grateful children who receive the wheelchairs,” she said.

The workshop volunteers also work to provide each wheelchair recipient with a handmade
rug, cushion cover and toy as an additional gift.

“The ’Wheelchairs for Kids’ project is a wonderful feel-good story, and Brother Olly has been
a driving force behind its success,” Mayor Roberts said.

“What a terrific thing to see one senior charity worker leading other seniors in the
community, right here in the City of Wanneroo.”
