Matting and vegetation planting in the sand dunes has taken place ahead of the summer months, while further planting will be carried out next winter.

Fred Stubbs Park reopened to the public on 29 August, and the remaining adjacent park area now just requires irrigation and turfing and is expected to be usable by mid December.

Mayor Tracey Roberts inspected the beach today and said she was pleased to see that the immediate coastal protection works were complete and advised that there was still some work to be done in regard to beach access.

"Thinking back to the condition of the beach this time last year after a series of severe storms and constant erosion, it is wonderful to see this project come full circle," Mayor Roberts said.

"Until now, our priority has been to protect the beach and park, which we have done and now our community can now enjoy the beach, park and playground ahead of summer.

"Our next priority will be looking at ways that we can improve access to the beach."

Mayor Roberts said long term protection options are also being investigated.

The Community Reference Group has met over the last few months on three occasions to provide input into the development of long term options and will meet again in early 2015.

Community updates will be provided via the City's website, Facebook page and a community information session planned for mid-2015.
