Wanneroo recognised for conservation of water

Published Tuesday, 18th November 2014

The City of Wanneroo is one of only two local governments announced as a finalist in the 2014 State Australian Water Association Awards.

Water Association Awards

Named as a finalist in the Conservation category for its North West Corridor Water Supply Strategy (in conjunction with the Department of Water), the annual awards promote outstanding work in the water sector and recognise innovation and excellence in technology, business and delivery of water projects.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the strategy had been developed to ensure the fast growing north-west corridor would have adequate groundwater supplies for future public open spaces.

"This strategy aims to provide sufficient irrigation for sporting and recreation spaces, limit saltwater intrusion to the aquifer and protect the local groundwater-dependent environment," Mayor Roberts said.

"By developing a comprehensive strategy to supply water for essential open space across 10,000 hectares of new urban development, the working group has shown an innovative approach to integrating groundwater use and land-use planning.

"Having adequate parks, playing fields and public open space is extremely important for our residents' health and wellbeing, and it's great to see that this has been recognised while at the same time being mindful of water availability."

The strategy was developed by a working group with representatives from the City of Wanneroo and Department of Water in consultation with developers, government agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

Winners of the State awards will be announced on Friday, 28 November.
