City of Wanneroo takes kangaroo plight to DPaW

Published Wednesday, 9th March 2016

The City of Wanneroo has sought Ministerial intervention on behalf of residents seeking an immediate and effective response to concerns about the welfare of kangaroos at Yanchep.

Kangaroo
Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City is facilitating discussion between the responsible organisations, Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) and Yanchep Sun City Country Club, in a bid to broker solutions to what is a serious issue.

“Our advice is that the kangaroos have been prone to migrate from the national park immediately to the north and the golf course into public open space and residential areas, resulting in the kangaroos becoming land-locked,” Mayor Roberts said.

“This has created problems with overcrowding, as well as placing the kangaroos at risk of being attacked by domestic dogs or hit by cars.

“We are certainly mindful of the impact this issue is having in the community and we are advocating for solutions.”

City of Wanneroo officers met with DPaW officials last week to seek their assurance that this disturbing issue will be resolved.

The City has also asked Sun City Country Club to allow kangaroos into the country club grounds from Saint Andrews Park and from the eastern side of the country club towards Yanchep National Park.

Mayor Roberts has written to the Minister for Environment, Albert Jacob requesting quick and effective action.

The City has taken the initiative to install additional signage to warn motorists about kangaroos in the area.

“We appreciate the support residents have shown in caring for the kangaroos and we will continue to work with the responsible parties towards a positive outcome,” Mayor Roberts said.

Anybody who sees sick, injured or orphaned animals should contact DPaW’s WILDCARE HELPLINE directly on 9474 9055.
