Noongar Elders will be celebrated in Wanneroo exhibition

Published Thursday, 7th July 2016

The strength and resilience of Noongar Elders from across the wheatbelt will be celebrated in a portrait exhibition held at Wanneroo Library.

Bush babies

The Bush Babies exhibition was inspired by a photograph and portrait painting of Hazel Winmar, a Ballardong Elder affectionately known as Nana Purple. The much loved Elder sadly passed away shortly after her 100th birthday and the exhibition continues as a tribute to her memory.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the exhibition featured a collection of portrait paintings, photographs and short stories honouring 16 Elders who were born in the bush.

“This is some of the most interesting artwork I have seen. Each piece tells a unique storyand gives a window in to the past challenges of Noongar life,” she said.

“It is our hope that people viewing these portraits will continue to open doors towards reconciliation and honour Elders all around Australia.”

Bush Babies – Honouring our Elders has already reached 72,000 people in Perth while
showing at WA Museum. The exhibition is continuing its tour from 21 July – 22 August 2016 in at the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre.

Key artist quotes:
“Portraits are a way of directly connecting to the soul, bypassing all the intellectual baggage of prejudice, attitude and fear. It is our hope that people viewing these portraits absorb this connection and respect.”
Artist Graham Smith

“As the portrait slowly evolved, I became quite sensitive to Noongar life and its challenges – of the past, present and future. After completing the portrait, I feel I have a closer understanding of the Bush Babies heritage – hence the title of my work – Strong Heritage.”
Artist Margaret Fleay
