Raising awareness for stroke victims

Published Tuesday, 12th July 2016

The City of Wanneroo invites people to attend the Northern Suburbs Stroke Support Group’s ‘have a go’ challenge where able-bodied people will perform daily tasks using their less dominant hand.

Raising awareness for stroke victims

The challenge is designed to raise awareness for stroke victims by highlighting the daily problems they face doing simple tasks.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the Northern Suburbs Stroke Support Group was the only support system north of the river and was vital to survivors.

“The group inspires and challenges those left devastated by a stroke by providing regular meetings that offer friendships and emotional support with fellow survivors,” she said.

“Northern Suburbs Stroke Support Group help survivors and their carers cope with life after a stroke and motivate them to get the most out of life by connecting them to available services and providing respite activities.

“I am so proud that we can support the group by providing meeting spaces, contributing funds towards respite activities and providing transport to outings.”

The ‘have a go’ challenge will be held on 19 July from 10am to 2pm at Gumblossom Community Centre in Quinns Rocks.

Activities will include making sandwiches, wrapping parcels, opening containers and moving through an obstacle course using disability equipment.
Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. In Australia, one in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime.

The event is free but people should register to receive an allocated time slot by calling Group Coordinator Sally Allen on 0417 951 511.

Northern Suburbs Stroke Support Groups meetings are held:

Wanneroo Recreation Centre – Second Friday of each month
Gumblossom Quinns Rocks – First and third Tuesday of every month
