Recent Department of Employment jobless figures highlight the dire need to look beyond the current electoral cycle when considering job creation strategies.

Having the equal highest unemployment rate in Perth (Girrawheen, Mirrabooka and Balga 25.1 per cent) is a symptom of the overall state economy and a statistic the City of Wanneroo is working hard to redress.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City is committed to its Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan and continues to work with small to large businesses to create jobs for now and the future.

“The City assists and promotes businesses who already employ skilled locals in Wangara, Landsdale and Neerabup and works closely with partners including the Wanneroo Business Association, Edith Cowan University and District 32 on innovative methods to improve job opportunities,” she said.

“The City continues to advocate for our deserving community, making the most of what we have and strengthening relationships in the private, state and federal government sectors.

“We continue to work hard to deliver a diverse range of projects using public and private partnerships.

“We are making the most of these partnerships to create career pathways, education and training opportunities and to also create ideal investment conditions for future job activity centres.

“The City’s range of initiatives includes return to work programs for skilled migrants in Girrawheen which provide meaningful employment and re-engagement through to innovation and entrepreneurial structured programs for high school start-ups.

“We are also focusing on encouraging industry diversification reducing the reliance on any one industry for employment through the uplift of the agribusiness, advanced manufacturing and clean technology sectors for our community.

“The City of Wanneroo is not alone in facing employment challenges - we share those challenges with the Cities of Joondalup and Stirling.”
