Wanneroo Garage Sale Trail a big success

Published Wednesday, 26th October 2016

City of Wanneroo residents are celebrating decluttered homes after the City’s participation in Garage Sale Trail on Saturday 22 October.

The event aims to help people think creatively about how they can reuse pre-loved items that might otherwise be put out for waste collection and possibly end up in landfill.

There were 127 individual garage sales held in the City with nearly 57,000 items listed for sale, and another 200 stalls at the Wanneroo Show Ground Special Swap Meet.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City finished in the top two councils for number of garage sales per capita and in the top 10 nationwide.

“We are thrilled at just how successful the day was, particularly because it was the City’s first time participating in the event,” Mayor Roberts said.

“I would like to thank the community for getting behind such an amazing cause that brings everyone together and raises awareness for recycling.

“Holding a garage sale is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbours and promote connected communities.

“We hope residents will continue to support this national campaign that makes a positive change for our environment.”

Sales generated approximately $48,000 locally including funds raised for good causes.

City of Wanneroo residents will have the opportunity to take part in Garage Sale Trail again on 21 October 2017, as part of the Council’s ongoing support of the national initiative.
