Street corner barbecues, exploring nature through the Aboriginal seasons and an Australia Day breakfast were among community events approved for funding at the Wanneroo Council’s November meeting.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said eight events were approved to access a total of almost $30,000 in the first round of the City’s 2016-17 Community Funding Program.

 “The Landsdale Residents Association will get $3,000 to fund 10 street corner barbecues at various parks in Landsdale from December through to April next year,” she said.

“The Quinns Rocks Environmental Group gets a similar amount for a novel program, ‘Exploring Nature by the Nyoongar Seasons’, at various locations in the North Coast Ward from February to December 2017.

“This will be an exciting way to learn about the six seasons in the Nyoongar calendar and how changes in the weather determine what types of natural foods will be most plentiful.

“The Wanneroo Scout Group has been earmarked to receive $3500 funding for an Australia Day Community Breakfast.

“All the grants are subject to strict conditions, such as getting City event approval, public liability insurance, proper costings and keeping a record of spending.”

Other beneficiaries of the Community Funding Program include:

The Royal Australian Airforce Association (WA Division) with $3000 for the ANZAC Day dawn service and “Gunfire Breakfast” as well as the Remembrance Day memorial service and sausage sizzle lunch;

The Quinns Rocks RSL Sub Branch for an ANZAC Day commemorative service and “Gunfire Breakfast’, the Vietnam Veterans Day service and lunch, and the Remembrance Day service and lunch, totalling $8,000;

The Yanchep Two Rocks RSL Sub Branch with $5,400 for an ANZAC Day Service 2017 and “Gunfire Breakfast”, Vietnam Veterans Day service and lunch, Merchant Navy Day service and lunch, Battle for Australia Day service and lunch, and Remembrance Day service and lunch;

More than $3,000 to the Edmund Rice Centre Mirrabooka Inc for its Community Sports Festival in April; and

Almost $750 to Charles Rawlins Taekwondo Inc to assist in funding a “Celebration of Martial Arts School Opening for Children” in the Pearsall Hocking area in early February.

A balance of nearly $45,000 remains in the Community Funding pool, with the second round of grants to be determined next March.
