Premier on board for northern corridor

Published Thursday, 11th May 2017

In great news for Wanneroo residents, the City had a fruitful meeting with Premier Mark McGowan MLA last week on the shared priorities for the northern growth corridor.

Tracey Roberts and Mark McGowan discuss State Government funding for the Northern Corridor

Together we discussed important issues, in particular the fast-tracking of essential transport infrastructure, including the rail extension to Yanchep, the dualling of Marmion Ave to Yanchep and the creation of local jobs, Mayor Tracey Roberts said.

She added that the Minister for Transport, Planning and Lands, Rita Saffioti, and the Attorney General, John Quigley were also in attendance, together with other Government MLAs whose seats fall within the City’s boundaries - Ms Sabine Winton, Member for Wanneroo; Ms Margaret Quirk, Member for Girrawheen; Mr Mark Folkard, Member for Burns Beach;  Ms Janine Freeman, Member for Mirrabooka; Ms Jessica Stojkovski, Member for Kingsley - in addition to the Hon. Martin Pritchard MLC, and the CEO and Directors of the City.

“The Premier and his Parliamentary colleagues have a very clear understanding of the challenges facing growth councils like the City of Wanneroo. We have almost 100,000 employed residents but almost 50 per cent have to travel outside of the Wanneroo area for work.

“For growth areas, such as ours, we agreed that creating local jobs for local people was a key focus. Continued travel for work causes significant traffic congestion, environmental and productivity issues, in addition to negative impacts on quality family time.

“Our target is to create an additional 100,000 local jobs to cater for an expected population of 350,000 by 2036. Improved transport infrastructure will result in an increasing number of businesses developing and thriving around the City of Wanneroo, which will create employment opportunities.

“And, while construction, retail and manufacturing are the main employment sectors within the City, a number of emerging ‘industries of opportunity’ have been identified including clean technology, advanced manufacturing and engineering, and modern agribusiness.

“We are also grateful for the Government’s commitment to establish a Water Reference Group to develop a solution to the irrigation issues facing our agricultural and horticultural sectors.

“There was discussion about the development of the Neerabup Industrial Area which includes more than 1,000 hectares of land and has the potential to create 20,000 jobs. A large proportion of the developable land in Neerabup is owned by the State Government and the City of Wanneroo, offering great opportunities for major employers to invest in the area.

“We look forward to working closely with our local Members of Parliament over the coming years in delivering for the northern growth corridor,” Mayor Roberts said.
