The City of Wanneroo is to commit to the Waterwise Council Program, with an aim to improve its water use.

The Program is also anticipated to increase awareness about water wastage and highlight the importance of water efficiency and conservation.

A decision was made at the Council meeting on 22 August to sign an MOU with the Water Corporation to finalise the agreement and to begin the process for the establishment of an internal water management team. This team will set goals to improve water efficiency and establish a water efficiency action plan.

During discussions last year, the Water Corporation acknowledged that the City was already a leader in Waterwise development, having previously actioned many of the requirements that make up the Program.

Once signed, the Waterwise Program has the potential to bring further benefits to the City, including staff access to free training, water and financial savings through improved efficiency, and the opportunity to participate in funded and co-funded water efficiency initiatives.

The Waterwise Council Program was launched in 2009, and is an initiative between the Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to encourage local governments to improve water use efficiency.
