Published Tuesday, 20th March 2018

The sound of whistles can be heard, the smell of turf is in the air and the floodlights have been switched on - the eagerly awaited Yanchep Active Open Space is now ready to be enjoyed.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts will officially open the facility this week with a community celebration on Saturday, 24 March 2018.

Come along and enjoy the free event, with sports activities, face painting and sausage sizzle to mark the opening of the $8.3 million project.

“Residents in our most northern suburbs have been looking forward to having this incredible sporting complex for some time. We acknowledge the assistance provided by Yanchep Beach Joint Venture in facilitating the early provision of a site for this much needed facility, and development of the access road,” Mayor Roberts said.

“With the support from the Yanchep/Two Rocks developers, I feel very proud that this wonderful community sporting space can now be enjoyed by a variety of different sporting clubs, catering for both summer and winter sports.”

Yanchep Redhawks Football Club and Yanchep District Junior Football Club are already training at YAOS, and the facility will also be home to Yanchep United Soccer Club, Yanchep Netball Club, Yanchep Little Athletics Club and Yanchep Redhawks Cricket Club.

The City was closely engaged with these key stakeholders throughout the development of the project, with the clubs’ input greatly informing the detailed design of the facilities.

The Yanchep Active Open Space includes two multi-purpose ovals catering for Australian rules football, soccer, cricket, rugby and athletics; two multi-purpose hardcourts for netball, basketball and tennis; cricket nets and long jump and discus pits; and floodlighting.

The playground is expected to be completed in April and the open space also has perimeter fencing, pathways, passive recreation areas, car parks and drop-off facilities.

The sports amenities building has six change-rooms, five storerooms, first-aid room, umpires room, kiosk, multi-purpose room, meeting room and external tiered seating for spectators.

“The multi-purpose and meeting room walls can be retracted to create a huge area, and the doors to the verandah can also be completely opened, allowing functions to use the outside space as well,” Mayor Roberts said.

“It is an incredibly versatile facility that will meet the needs of our local community.”

The City received a grant of $1.74 million from the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund for the open space and building.

The City also acknowledges the significant contributions of Yanchep Beach Joint Venture (YBJV), Capricorn Village Joint Venture (CVJV), Frasers Property, LandCorp, Peet, Primewest, Department of Housing, Pindan, Westbury Investments, New Orion Investments, Fini Group and Tokyu Corporation.
