City continues to tackle school parking woes

Published Friday, 26th October 2018

The City of Wanneroo is continuing its work to address school parking issues.

City Ranger with residents

City Rangers have embarked on an education program to raise awareness about the importance of parking safely around our schools.

Safe parking means not parking on verges or roadways which are signposted as no parking areas, and never parking on footpaths.

Parking in these areas can create safety hazards for pedestrians as well as other road users by blocking safe walking areas and lines of sight.

The message about safe parking around schools is considered so important that teams of Rangers and Parking officers are now patrolling schools throughout the City during peak pick-up and drop-off times.

The intention is for parking teams to spend up to two weeks at each school, so they can assess issues and help educate families.

While safe parking education is the primary focus, infringements will be issued to those who continue to disregard parking laws despite previous warnings.

It is important to note that the issue of school parking is complex and not limited to the reach of local governments.

School locations are determined by the State Government, while dedicated parking areas on school sites are determined by the Education Department as well as individual schools.

Similarly, Children’s Crossing staff are managed by WA Police, on request by individual schools.
