General waste bin lid swap

Red Lid bins landing page banner

As part of the City of Wanneroo’s Better Bin System, your general waste bins were to receive a new red lid between Monday 3 May and Friday 4 June. Bins that were missed will have their lid swap occur during July and August.

To assist us with the changeover, from Monday 19 July please follow the steps below on your usual waste collection day:

  • Step 1: Present your general waste bin for collection from 6am as usual.
  • Step 2: Your general waste bin’s dark-green lid will be swapped for a red lid on one of your usual waste collection days.
  • Step 3: Leave your general waste bin out until 6pm on bin day so we can complete the lid swap, even if your bin is empty.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my bin lid being changed?

The City of Wanneroo is fitting all its general waste bins with a red lid to align with the Australian Standard for Mobile Waste Containers (AS 4123).

This will make it easier for all Australians to know which bin to put things in, even if they change where they live. Additionally, the terms of the State Government grant received by the City of Wanneroo requires all household bins to comply with the Australian standards for kerbside bins. This means all general waste bins need to be replaced with a red lid, else the City will be ineligible to receive full funding allocation.

How do I know when my lid will be changed?

The initial rollout of the general waste red lid swaps was completed on Friday 4 June. If your lid was not changed during this time, your lid will be changed during July and August on your usual waste collection day. From Monday 19 July, please leave your general waste bin out from 6am to 6pm each bin day, until your lid has been changed.

What happens if my lid wasn't changed on its scheduled day?

If your bin lid wasn't changed on its scheduled day before Friday 4 June, we will return during July or August to change your lid. From Monday 19 July, if your bin lid is not changed on its new scheduled day, please continue to leave your general waste bin out from 6am to 6pm each bin day, until your lid has been changed.

You can continue to use your general waste bin as per normal throughout this process.

What happens if my bin wasn't left out?

If your bin was not out on the kerb and did not receive a red lid prior to Friday 4 June, we will return during July or August to change your lid. From Monday 19th of July, please leave your general waste bin out from 6am to 6pm each bin day, until your lid has been changed.

You can continue to use your general waste bin as per normal throughout this process.

What happens if I registered for a 140L general waste bin?

If you have registered to receive a smaller general waste bin, your lid will not be replaced. Your new 140L red lid general waste bin will be delivered in July and August 2021.

What will happen to the old green lids?

The old green lids will be recycled into plastic pellets to be used to make new bins.

Why does my general waste bin have a sticker on it?

Either you have registered for a smaller 140L general waste bin or the size of your existing bin is incompatible with the new red lids the City of Wanneroo is installing. In both cases, your property will receive a new general waste bin that will be delivered in July and August 2021. For more information, scan the QR code on your bin sticker.
