City of Wanneroo launches inaugural 24-Hour Swimathon for Telethon

Swimmers will take the plunge at Wanneroo Aquamotion on Telethon weekend (17 and 18 October), swimming laps for 24 hours, across four-hour blocks, to raise funds for sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged children across Western Australia.

Swimmers will be in the pool from 1.30pm Saturday until 1.30pm Sunday. That’s a lot of laps!

Participants can register as individuals or teams of up to four people as part of the 24-hour challenge.

Mayor Aitken said the City was proud to launch this inaugural event in support of one of Western Australia’s most beloved charities and the incredible work it does for children and families across Western Australia.

“It is a privilege to play a part in Telethon weekend by hosting this fun challenge at Aquamotion,” she said.

“Every lap completed and every dollar raised will help support children when they need it most, raising vital funds for life-changing services, programs, equipment and medical research.”

Mayor Aitken said it was only fitting that Aquamotion hosted an event of this nature, given its Dolphin Program had helped children and adults of all abilities develop confidence, independence and lifelong water safety skills in an inclusive environment over the past 20 years.

“The Swimathon builds on this commitment by bringing people together to raise funds that will have a lasting impact on the lives of young Western Australians and their families," she said.

The event is open to swimmers of all abilities, from experienced lap swimmers and sporting clubs to groups of friends looking to take on a challenge for a worthy cause.

A $50 registration fee applies per individual or team, with all participants encouraged to maximise their impact through sponsorship and fundraising.

Only 60 time slots are available, with places expected to fill quickly.
