City supports innovative local start-ups

Led by Curtin University, the intensive week-long program supports entrepreneurs and innovators in preparing their business ideas for market.

Scholarship recipient Anita Richards is developing an innovative modular off-grid renewable energy concept, aimed at remote industries, emergency services, regional communities, mobile operators and travellers.

Through participation in Curtin Ignition, Anita will further develop the commercialisation strategy, investigate market demand and progress towards prototype development.

Mark Dixon has also been awarded the City scholarship for his Engage & Braggers project, an interactive platform designed to help sporting venues, entertainment venues and live events create more engaging and family-friendly experiences.

Engage & Braggers seeks to create a platform that combines gamification, QR technology, live challenges, educational content, rewards systems and fan engagement tools to transform passive experiences into interactive ones.

The concept is in the early stages of commercialisation, with market validation and prototype testing underway. Through the scholarship, Mark aims to refine the business model, strengthen industry partnerships and progress pilot programs.

Mayor Linda Aitken said she was proud of the City’s ongoing collaboration with Curtin University to offer the scholarships for the past 11 years.

“Through this scholarship we are supporting local entrepreneurs to transform their innovative ideas into successful reality in the business world,” she said.

“These projects align to the City’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions, advanced industries and emerging technologies.”

The Curtin Ignition Program runs from 15 August to 21 September 2026.
