The future Alkimos Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) facility has taken a step forward, with Council endorsing a draft concept design for community consultation.

The proposed two-storey facility is set for South Alkimos Beach, north of the club’s current temporary space and west of the Alkimos Wastewater Treatment Plant, identified in the Alkimos Eglinton District Structure Plan as the preferred location for a future surf lifesaving club.

The draft concept provides for approximately 2,300sqm of internal floor space across two levels, incorporating equipment storage, first aid and patrol facilities, meeting rooms, a gymnasium, kiosk, function spaces, lookout tower and a commercial tenancy.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the draft concept plan marked an important milestone towards delivering a permanent home for Alkimos SLSC, which has 550-600 members this season and sustained annual growth of 15 to 20 per cent.

"The design provides a facility that responds to the current and future operational needs of the Alkimos SLSC, while also supporting broader community use and activation of the future Alkimos Coastal Village precinct as a visitor destination.

"We believe this is a fantastic design with all the necessary amenities, supporting the opening of a new beach in Alkimos while creating a vibrant coastal destination for residents and visitors."

The Alkimos SLSC is currently operating from a temporary facility at Coolangatta Rise and has outgrown the space as membership continues to increase.

The concept design focuses on integrating with the surrounding coastal environment while minimising impacts on significant dune systems and native vegetation.

The site was selected for its suitability for swimming and lifesaving operations, while providing strong visibility over the primary swimming beach and patrolled areas.

The estimated project cost is approximately $32.7 million with construction currently anticipated to commence in 2028/29.

Submissions for both projects close on 26 October 2026.

Both projects will then be presented back to Council to consider the next phase.
