General waste bin changeover

As part of the City of Wanneroo’s Better Bin System, all properties will have their general waste bin lid changed to a red lid to meet the Australian Standard for Mobile Waste Containers (AS 4123). This ensures the City complies with the terms of the State Government grant received by the City.

While most properties now have a red lid general waste bin, the City is still attending a small amount of properties to complete the changeover to a red lid general waste bin. Some of these properties simply need their lid changed, while others have old general waste bins that are incompatible with the new red lids. In these cases, properties will receive a brand-new red lid general waste bin and their old bin will be removed.

If you are waiting for your old green lid general waste bin to be updated to one with a red lid, or are awaiting removal of your old general waste bin, please read the most frequently asked questions below.

Lid swap FAQs

When will my lid be changed?

Lid swaps will be completed over the remainder of 2021. If you were previously given a date and the lid swap did not occur at this time, your property will be automatically rescheduled. Your old green lid general waste bin will continue to be collected and emptied until we are able to attend your property to complete the lid swap.

If you have registered with us for SMS/email updates, we will contact you with an expected date for the lid swap in due course. If you would like to register your details to be notified, please complete our online form or contact the City on 9405 5000.

Please be assured that we have a record of all properties that have not yet had their lid swapped and your property will not miss out.

What will happen to the old green lids?

The old green lids will be recycled into plastic pellets to be used to make new bins.

What do I need to do to have my lid swapped?

Your lid swap will be scheduled by our Waste team. When your lid swap is due, assist us with the changeover, by following the steps below on your usual waste collection day:

  • Step 1: Present your general waste bin for collection from 6am as usual.
  • Step 2: Your general waste bin’s dark-green lid will be swapped for a red lid on your usual waste collection day.
  • Step 3: Leave your general waste bin out until 6pm on bin day so we can complete the lid swap, even if your bin is empty.

If you have registered with us for SMS/email updates, we will contact you with an expected date for the lid swap. If you would like to register your details to be notified, please complete our online form or contact the City on 9405 5000.

If you are not registered for SMS/email notifications and do not wish to register to find out what week your lid will be changed, please make sure you follow the above steps on every bin day every week until your lid is changed.

Why does my general waste bin have a sticker on it?

Your bin will have received a sticker because it was found to be incompatible with the new red lids the City is installing. Your property will be receiving a new red lid general waste bin. Please see ‘Incompatible bin FAQs’ below for further information.

Incompatible bin FAQs

Why can’t I keep my old bin?

The new red lids currently being fitted to all City of Wanneroo general waste bins are not compatible with all old bins. To ensure your new lid fits securely, your old bin will be replaced with a new bin.

The City of Wanneroo is fitting all its general waste bins with a red lid to align with Australian Standards.

Following the completion of this process, bins with the old dark green lid will not be emptied by the City of Wanneroo.

Will my new general waste bin be the same size as my old one?

Yes. All incompatible bins will be replaced with a new bin of the same size.

When will I receive my new replacement bin?

Replacement bins will be delivered over the remainder of 2021. If you were previously given a date and your new bin did not arrive at this time, your property will be automatically rescheduled. Your old general waste bin will continue to be collected and emptied until we are able to attend your property to replace your bin.

If you have registered with us for SMS/email updates, we will contact you with an expected delivery date in due course. If you would like to register your details to be notified, please complete our online form or contact the City on 9405 5000.

Please be assured that we have a record of all properties that have not yet had their replacement bin delivered and your property will not miss out.

What will happen to my old bin?

Your old bin will be removed from your property. All old bins removed from service are recycled into new plastic products, such as new kerbside bins.

When will my old bin be removed?

Old general waste bins will be removed over the remainder of 2021, after your property has received a new replacement general waste bin. If you were previously given a date and your old bin was not removed at this time, your property will be automatically rescheduled. Please do not leave your old bin out on the kerb for removal until you have been advised to do so.

If you have registered with us for SMS/email updates, we will contact you with an expected date of removal in due course. If you would like to register your details to be notified, please complete our online form or contact the City on 9405 5000.

Please be assured that we have a record of all properties that have not yet had their old general waste bins removed and your property will be actioned as soon as possible.

Note: as you have received a new red lid general waste bin, your old general waste bin will no longer be emptied by the City so should be kept free of waste. It will only be removed from your property if empty.
