Warhol lands in Wanneroo

Published Wednesday, 6th March 2024

The highly anticipated Andy Warhol: Icons exhibition opens today at Wanneroo Regional Gallery, as part of the National Gallery of Australia’s Sharing the National Collection initiative.

Andy Warhol 'Marilyn Monroe' art

From today, over 50 artworks by Pop Art’s founding father, Andy Warhol, will be shared with the Gallery over two years.

The exclusive showcase features some of Warhol's most iconic works including Elvis, the Campbell's Soup suite, the complete Mick Jagger portraits series, the infamous Electric Chair series, and the rarely seen Flowers portfolio.

Works of art will be rotated every three months, so visitors can return to the gallery to see new pieces over the life of the two-year exhibition.

Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken said the partnership between the galleries – the first under the Sharing the National Collection initiative – gave people from all over Perth unprecedented access to international treasures.

“To say we’re honoured to host this exhibition is an understatement,” she said.

“Through our partnership with the National Gallery of Australia and their Sharing the National Collection initiative, we’re bringing artworks by one of the most influential artists of the 20th century to the whole of Perth for free at Wanneroo Regional Gallery.

“Everybody knows the distinct work of Andy Warhol and I encourage people to come along to appreciate these iconic works, up close and personal.

“We’re excited to share this collection with our community, and we thank the Australian Government and the National Gallery of Australia for their support.”

Minister for the Arts Tony Burke said it was fantastic to see pieces from the national collection make their way to the west.

“With Revive – Australia’s new National Cultural Policy – the Government decided that instead of having some of the National Gallery’s best works kept in storage where no one could see them, we’d start sharing them with galleries all around the country.

“I’m really pleased that we’re doing that for the Wanneroo Regional Gallery, and it doesn’t get much bigger than Andy Warhol.”

Director of the National Gallery Dr Nick Mitzevich said the loan partnership represented how truly national the program is and the determination to see the collection put to work.

“Andy Warhol’s iconic painting Elvis together with screenprints of Campbell’s soup cans, celebrities, rockstars, electric chairs and flowers will be seen by a whole new generation of audiences on the west coast.

“What a tremendous opportunity this program provides.”

These works of art are on long term loan from the National Gallery of Australia with support from the Australian Government as part of Sharing the National Collection.
