City sets 10-year plan for safer neighbourhoods

Safe public spaces, strong emergency preparedness and closer coordination with safety partners will be priorities under the City of Wanneroo’s new Community Safety Strategy.
Council endorsed the Community Safety Strategy 2026-2036 at its September Ordinary Council Meeting, setting out how the City will respond to community safety as Wanneroo continues to grow.
Mayor Linda Aitken said feeling safe was an important part of what makes a neighbourhood a good place to live.
“People should feel safe at home, walking through their neighbourhood, visiting a park or spending time at their local centre,” she said.
“As our City grows, we need to keep pace with the changing needs of our community and make sure safety remains part of how we plan, deliver services and look after our neighbourhoods.”
The strategy recognises that safety is everyone’s responsibility and the important roles of residents and businesses, developers, WA Police, emergency services and State Government, businesses and residents, and how everyone can work together to support safer communities.
“There is no single solution to community safety and no one organisation can deliver it alone,” Mayor Aitken said.
“Our focus is on where the City can make a difference, while continuing to work closely with our partners and community.”
Progress will be measured against the Council Plan target for neighbourhood safety, with actions reviewed each year to respond to emerging issues and community needs.
