Bookable verge collections

The City will be moving to a new flexible service that gives you the freedom to choose when your household bulk junk and bulk green waste is collected each year.

The new bookable bulk waste verge collection replaces the scheduled bulk junk and green waste service.

What is each residential property entitled to?

Under the new system, every residential property will be able to book the following collections every financial year:

  • bulk junk waste, up to 3m³
  • bulk green waste, up to 3m³
  • mattresses, up to 3 items
  • white goods, up to 4 items
  • e-waste (electronic), up to 6 items

All items will still be required to be placed on your verge ready for collection.

Different types of waste must be separated (as they are collected by different trucks) and placed loose on your verge (not in a skip bin or bagged).

Bookings will open in June 2024 with collections beginning 1 July 2024.

All bookings are subject to availability, only booked collections will result in items being collected.

Frequently asked questions

The new booking process

What is the new bookable verge collections service?

The City is transitioning to a new way of collecting bulk junk and green waste from June 2024.

The new service will see the City move to a bookable model. Residents will have the option to book their bulk waste collection(s) online or over the phone, at a time convenient for them.

Residents will be entitled to one of the following collections each financial year.

Bulk green waste

Up to 3m³ (3m x 1m x 1m)

How do I arrange a booked verge collection?

The bookings for the bookable verge collection service are not currently available, they will open in 4 June 2024. More information about the new system will be available for residents closer to this time.

When the new system launches, residents (occupier or owner) will be able to book collections online or over the phone. Accessibility support will be available for those who require assistance with digital systems.

When booking, residents will be provided with a list of possible dates to book a collection.

Why is the City changing to a bookable verge collection service?

The bookable verge collection service offers a range of benefits:

  • Residents can book their bulk waste collection(s) for the next available date convenient to them.
  • Encourages residents to consider gifting good quality items a second life before putting them out for bookable verge collection.
  • Reduces instances of illegal dumping and inconsiderate scavenging, as waste is presented on the verge for up to three days only. This helps keep streets tidier.
  • Increases resource recovery as waste will be pre-sorted into waste categories to improve resource recovery for recycling, resulting in less waste sent to landfill.
  • Improves the City’s capacity to respond to the bulk collection needs of its growing communities.

When will the service change take place?

The target start date for the bookable verge collection service is for bookings to open 4 June 2024 and collections to begin 1 July 2024. Please keep visiting the website for timing updates.

When will the current scheduled verge collections end?

Scheduled verge collections for bulk junk waste finished in December 2023, and green waste only collections will continue until 30 June 2024.

Current bulk green collection dates are published on the Green waste verge collection schedule page.

Did the community ask for this service?

In 2018, the City conducted a Community Waste Survey, which found that people wanted a service that was more convenient and sustainable than the current scheduled bulk waste collection service.

The community’s views on the proposed pre-booked verge-side bulk collection service were also sought in September and October 2022, prior to Council endorsement of the new model at the February 2023 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Why did the City undertake a review of bulk services?

The review was conducted to identify and meet the needs of bulk collection's for the City's growing community.

It found the bookable verge collection model to be safe and operationally practical, as well as a financial and environmentally sustainable approach long-term.

Will a bookable verge service affect my Wangara Greens tip passes?

No, the new service will not affect Wangara Greens tip passes. The City will continue to provide four green waste tipping vouchers with annual rates notices, for use at the Wangara Greens Recycling Facility.

Each voucher allows for the disposal of a standard 6x4 trailer-load of clean greens for free. If you are a renter in the City of Wanneroo, please contact your landlord or property manager to obtain the vouchers.

I have items that are not accepted through bulk collection. What can I do with them?

If you have items that aren’t accepted through the kerbside bin collection or bookable verge collection service then they can likely be dropped off at a Drop off or Recycling centre. Take to drop-off points | WasteSorted

When should I put my waste on the verge?

Place items on your verge no more than 3 days before your scheduled collection date and before 6:00am on your collection day.

How should I separate items on my verge?

If you have booked different waste categories for collection on the same day, please separate your waste into separate piles as different items will be collected by separate trucks. It is very important to correctly select what types of items will be put out when you complete your booking. If you don't, some of your items may not be collected and may result in you having to book another collection.

Separating helps us reduce waste sent to landfill and allows us to collect more efficiently and at less cost. It also ensures we don't miss any of your compliant verge waste!

Please separate your Bulk Waste (not exceeding three cubic metres (3m³ in total) into piles as such:

  • Bulk Junk waste
  • Bulk Garden waste
  • E-waste (max 6 items)
  • White goods (max 4 items)
  • Mattresses (max 3 items)

Where do I place my verge waste?

Items can be placed on your front verge, side verge or in a laneway. Please do not obstruct the footpath, vehicle access, your normal bin service or the line of sight for motorists. We will not collect items placed against walls, fences, poles, trees, sprinklers and other utilities. We do not collect from vacant blocks, parks or reserves. These items will be maanged as ilegal dumping, which may result in fines being issued as appropriate.

Where do I place my waste if I have no verge?

For residents that have minimal or no verge that can be easily accessed, there will be an option available on the booking form for the Waste Services team to contact you to identify a suitable location to present your waste. You can also suggest an alternative location.

Please note: Waste should not be placed on your neighbour's verge without their permission.

Cancelling, rescheduling and missed bookings

You can cancel your collections via the booking's confirmation email sent to you after you originally booked. If you have any troubles, please contact our customer relations team at least three (3) working days prior to your booked collection date.

Missing your booked collection date will cause it to be forfeited, unless it was due to an emergency. If this is the case, please call or email our customer relations team and provide a relevant professional's testimony (such as a doctor's note/certificate) as proof.

When I type in my address into the booking form an error message comes up. What should I do?

If your address does not appear in the booking system, please contact us on (08) 9405 5000 and we can assist you with your booking.

Can I have extra collections or additional volume?

Extra collections or additional volume will be available from July 2024, pending approval of the fees and approved by Council at the end of June.

Where will items go for processing?

  • Bulk waste will be taken to a recycling and transfer station facility where commercial and domestic waste is processed prior to disposal. The facility separates the waste from the recyclable items (primarily wood, metal and cardboard) and recovers up to 35% of the material prior to sending waste to landfill.
  • Garden organics are taken to a green waste recyling facility for further processing where 100% of the material is reused.
  • Mattresses are processed at a recycling facility where up to 70% of all its components are recycled.
  • White goods and e-waste are processed at a recycling facility; recovery rates will vary depending on the type of item processed.

Please note: Fridges and air conditioning units will be degassed in accordance with the requirements of applicable Federal legislation (The Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989).

Who is eligible for bookable verge collections?

A: Households within the City of Wanneroo that pay a waste service charge are eligible to book. However:

  • If you live in a property without a verge, you will still have access to the booked verge collection service. Contact the City to arrange an alternative collection location.
  • Large unit complexes/strata (above 20 units) will be contacted regarding their verge collection services. These collections will be booked by your strata/property owner.
  • All other property owners and occupiers (renters) can book their allocation directly via the online form or by phone.

Can I save my allocated collections for the following year?

No. You have one collection of each waste category per financial year, and they do not accrue.

Can I share with my collections with my neighbours?

As long as the collection volumes/amounts are within the accepted amounts, residents are welcome to share collections with their neighbours as suits them. You cannot add to a neighbours collection without their approval.

I’ve just moved in but the booking form says all of the allocations for my address have been used?

Please contact the City on 9405 5000 to discuss your situation and we can explore possible solutions.
