Bookable bulk verge collections
Important note regarding bulk junk collections in Alexander Heights, Girrawheen, Koondoola and parts of Marangaroo:
The transition to the City’s bookable waste service impacted the final round of scheduled bulk junk waste collections that were planned to occur during May and June 2024 in Alexander Heights, Girrawheen, Koondoola and parts of Marangaroo.
The City is currently exploring available solutions that can be provided to affected residents. The City will provide a further update to those affected as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding while we transition to this new service.
Please note, the bookable service is available for all eligible residents and bookings can be made below or by calling the City on (08) 9405 5000.
What is the bookable verge waste collection service?
The City has moved to a new flexible service for verge collections for bulk waste. This means that instead of collecting bulk junk and greens at set times for each suburb throughout the year, residents can now book in a bulk junk or greens collection service and arrange to have it collected at a time that suits them. Please note this is not a skip bin service. As different types of waste are collected by different trucks, waste must be separated by type and placed on your verge.
Every residential property paying a waste service fee is eligible to book one collection of each of the following, each financial year:
- bulk hard waste, up to 3m³ (3m x 1m x 1m)
- bulk green waste, up to 3m³ (3m x 1m x 1m)
- mattresses, up to 3 items
- white goods, up to 4 items
- e-waste (electronic), up to 6 items.
The new booking system allows you to select what waste type you need collected and book an available date that is convenient for you. As each waste type is collected by different trucks, it must be separated and placed on your verge loosely. A skip bin will not be provided.
Dates available are usually a couple of weeks in advance, so make sure you book before placing any items out for collection. Items will only be collected if a booking has been made.

Select an available date and the type of waste you would like collected. If you need help with booking, you can call us on 9405 5000.
How should I place items on my verge?
You can place your items on your verge up to three days before your booked collection date. Place items either on your front or side verge, laneway or another location suitable location for your property. If placing on the front verge, ensure your waste is in front of your letterbox on the verge, as collection staff cannot collect items within the property boundary.
Ensure your items are not leaning against anything and are at least one metre away from any obstructions such as sprinklers, water meters and poles.
Make sure you are not obstructing the footpath, your normal bin service or the line of sight for motorists.
All items need to be placed out by 6am on your collection day.
If you have booked multiple collections for different waste types within the same week, please ensure you set these out separately into the following piles:
- Bulk junk waste up to 3m³ (3m x 1m x 1m)
- Bulk garden waste up to 3m³ (3m x 1m x 1m)
- E-waste (maximum 6 items)
- White goods (maximum 4 items)
- Mattresses (maximum 3 items)

When should I put my waste on the verge?
Place items on your verge no more than 3 days before your scheduled collection date and before 6am on your collection day.
What if I live in a strata managed property?
If you live within a strata managed property with 20 units or over, please contact your strata manager on how to book.
If you are a strata manager, please call us on (08) 9405 5000 to organise a booking.
How can I change or cancel an existing booking?
If you need to change your booking you will need to cancel your original booking and create a new one.
You can cancel your booking up to 3 working days before your collection date. After you login, your booking will be listed under 'Open Service Requests'. To cancel, click 'Open' and select 'Cancel booking' at the bottom of the page. If you wish to rebook for a new date, cancel your existing booking and then follow the steps for a new booking.
What can be collected
What bulk junk items are accepted?
Accepted:
- Furniture (no glass), including couches, bedframes, bunk beds etc
- Bicycles
- Toys
- Carpet and linoleum
- Fencing materials (wood and steel only)
- Wood (not garden waste)
- Wire
- Gates
- Barbecues (not gas bottles)
Please do not include items larger than 1.5m long where practical.
Not accepted:
- Vehicles, car bodies and car parts
- Tyres
- Batteries
- Asbestos products
- Flammable liquids
- Building materials
- Bricks, rubble and concrete
- Glass panels (table tops, window panes)
- Gas bottles
- Super six or fibre cement sheets
- Hazardous material
- Anything included as part of a green waste collection
- Earthworks (dirt, soil or sand)
Please note, mattresses will only be collected as part of a booked mattress collection.
What bulk green waste items are accepted?
Accepted:
- Organic garden waste
- Tree branches
- Twigs
Please present items loosely on the verge (no bags or boxes), items larger than 1.5m long or 30cm wide will not be collected.
Not accepted:
- Chemically treated or painted/stained timber
- Large tree stumps (they must be cut into smaller pieces)
- Rocks, bricks and rubble
- Dirt, soil and sand
- Flowerpots and garden hoses
- Lawn
- Bagged items
- Anything included as part of a bulk junk waste collection
What items are accepted for mattress collections?
We accept mattresses and bed bases (ensembles) only as part of a mattress collection, with a maximum of 3 items (bed bases count as 1 item) allocated per residential address per year. Bed bases can be presented as part of the mattress collection or bulk junk collection, whichever is most convenient. Headboards, bedframes and bunkbeds should only be presented as part of a bulk junk waste collection.

- Fridges and freezers (with doors removed or taped closed)
- Washing machines and dryers (with doors removed or taped closed)

- Free standing cookers
- Dishwashers

What items are accepted for e-waste (electronic) collections?

- Desktop computers
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Monitors

Additional FAQs
Where will items go for processing?
- Bulk waste will be taken to a recycling and transfer station facility where commercial and domestic waste is processed prior to disposal. The facility separates the waste from the recyclable items (primarily wood, metal and cardboard) and recovers up to 35% of the material prior to sending waste to landfill.
- Garden organics are taken to a green waste recycling facility for further processing, where 100% of the material is reused.
- Mattresses are processed at a recycling facility, where up to 70% of all its components are recycled.
- White goods and e-waste are processed at a recycling facility. Recovery rates vary depending on the type of item processed.
Please note, fridges and air conditioning units will be degassed in accordance with the requirements of applicable federal legislation (The Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989).
Missing your booked collection date will cause it to be forfeited, unless it was due to an emergency. If this is the case, please call or email our customer relations team and provide a relevant professional's testimony (such as a doctor's note/certificate) as proof.
Can I have extra collections or additional volume?
The City will be adding extra collections and volumes for an additional cost from November 2024.
Can I save my allocated collections for the following year?
No. You have one collection of each waste type per financial year, and they do not accrue.
Can I share with my collections with my neighbours?
As long as the collection volumes/amounts are within the accepted amounts, residents are welcome to share collections with their neighbours. You cannot add to a neighbours collection without their approval.
I have items that are not accepted through bulk collection. What can I do with them?
- The main drop off facilities nearest to the City of Wanneroo include Tamala Park, Wangara Greens Recycling Facility, and Recycling Centre Balcatta. For more information on items accepted at these site please contact the facilities directly as some items can incur a cost.
How can I donate, reuse or sell items?
Donate
Charities and op shops are very grateful to receive good quality items. Many will even collect it for free. Items that can be donated include furniture, white goods, electrical items, homewares, toys, clothes, sports equipment and books.
Reuse
Gumtree and Facebook buy nothing groups are great ways to give your items a new home. You might even make some cash.
Recycle
There are many recycling services in the City and many are free for residents. Visit our Waste drop-off webpage for further information.
Why is the City changing to a bookable verge collection service?
The bookable verge collection service offers a range of benefits:
- Residents can book their bulk waste collection(s) for the next available date convenient to them.
- Encourages residents to consider gifting good quality items a second life before putting them out for bookable verge collection.
- Reduces instances of illegal dumping and inconsiderate scavenging, as waste is presented on the verge for up to three days only. This helps keep streets tidier.
- Increases resource recovery as waste will be pre-sorted into waste categories to improve resource recovery for recycling, resulting in less waste sent to landfill.
- Improves the City’s capacity to respond to the bulk collection needs of its growing communities.
Will a bookable verge service affect my Wangara Greens tip passes?
No, the new service will not affect Wangara Greens tip passes. The City will continue to provide four green waste tipping vouchers with annual Rates Notices, for use at the Wangara Greens Recycling Facility.
Each voucher allows for the disposal of a standard 6x4 trailer-load of clean greens for free. If you are a renter in the City of Wanneroo, please contact your landlord or property manager to obtain the vouchers.
When I type in my address into the booking form an error message comes up. What should I do?
