Hazardous Household Waste Disposal

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes unwanted household products that contain chemicals or substances that can be harmful to you, your family, your pets, or the environment:

  • Poisoning or severe burns if swallowed, inhaled or contacts skin
  • Reactions with other chemicals or heat resulting in fire or toxic fumes
  • Leaking into the ground and contaminating soil or groundwater
  • Injuring waste staff if placed in household bins or out for verge collections
  • Polluting the environment if placed in landfill. 

How to safely dispose of household hazardous waste

You can safely drop off many types of household hazardous waste, free of charge, to approved facilities including Tamala Park in Mindarie and the Balcatta Recycling Centre, through the Household Hazardous Waste Program. 

The Program accepts 20kg or litres per material type and only domestic waste (see list of accepted HHW materials below).  No business waste is accepted.

Accepted materials:

  • Acids and alkalis
  • Aerosols
  • Batteries - household (tape terminals)
  • Engine coolants and glycols
  • Fire extinguishers - Non halon (red) only
  • Flammables
  • Flares
  • Fluorescent lamps and tubes (CFLs)
  • Gas cylinders (BBQ & small leisure or camping LPGs, butane canisters and disposable helium cylinders only)
  • Household chemicals (e.g. cleaners)
  • Paint
  • Pesticides/herbicides
  • Poisons/toxics
  • Pool chemicals
  • Smoke detectors
  • Unknown chemicals must be in sealed, chemical resistant containers.

Materials that cannot be accepted through the HHW Program:

  • Asbestos
  • Commercial, business, laboratory, farm or industrial waste
  • Cooking oil
  • E-cigarettes/vapes
  • Electronic waste or batteries embedded in products
  • EPIRBs and PLBs
  • EV Batteries
  • Explosives, ammunition and firearms
  • Fire extinguishers - Halon (yellow)
  • Gas cylinders excluded:
    • Car LPG tanks
    • Large gas cylinders (such as 45kg LPG gas bottles) (contact the manufacturer for return options)
    • Nitrous oxide canisters, "nangs"of any size
    • Other gas chemistries (contact the manufacturer for return options)
    • Sodastream canisters (return to purchase locations/contact Sodastream for return options)
    • CO₂ cylinders of other types (take back to supplier/manufacturer for return options).
  • Medications and pharmaceuticals
  • Mobile phones (take to a phone retailer for MobileMuster drop off)
  • Motor oil
  • Printer cartridges/toners
  • Sharps and needles
  • Tyres
