This exhibition shows how ‘crafting’ – traditionally considered women’s work – can be used for political expression and social change.

Changemakers consists of eight textile banners that represent a range of historical and contemporary activist movements including the women’s suffrage campaign, as well as banners displayed in town halls and churches.

Many of the social issues raised by early activists remain vitally relevant today, including equal pay, sexual harassment, family violence, and female representation in Parliament and business.

Repurpose curtain netting into produce bags - Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre

Peg bag made from net curtains

In the past when families didn’t have much money to spare and with shops far away, they reused and repurposed what they had to make useful items out of disposable objects which was called ‘making do'.

Hessian sacks were turned into blankets and also used to make early fridges known as Coolgardie Safes; clothing was patched, restitched for other children, and gradually became rags for cleaning; kerosene tins were used for storage and carrying containers and children made their own toys from items around the house.

As part of WA's ban on single-use plastics this year plastic fruit and vegetable produce bags will be phased out. Learn how to create useful and unique alternatives using repurposed curtain netting during aa two-hour workshop where you'll be guided by an experienced sewing facilitator. Sewing machines and materials will be provided.
