Information

As part of the City’s commitment to deliver our Active Transport Plan 2022/23 to 2025/26; a Safe Active Street (SAS) walking and bike riding route is planned in Sinagra and Ashby for Santa Rosalia Vista, Seurat Loop and Cezane Bend; connected by a 3.5m wide red asphalt shared path with mid-block crossing on Pinjar Road between Santa Rosalia Vista and Seurat Loop.

Safe active streets (SAS) are active transport routes on quiet local streets, where speeds have been reduced to 30 km/h to allow for a safer shared street space. With lower traffic speeds, the streets become safer for walking, and bike riding of all ages and abilities, as well as for drivers. They also form part of the wider bicycle network, connecting to off-road shared paths and linking community amenities such as schools, railway stations or shops.

For further information, Community members can visit the Department of Transport website

The City’s vision for the proposed SAS project is to create a shared street space on Santa Rosalia Vista, Seurat Loop and Cezane Bend that provides a convenient travel option within a safe and attractive environment for people riding and walking of all ages and abilities. The objectives of the project are to:

  • Reduce vehicle numbers and vehicle speeds
  • Increase the number of people of all ages and abilities making local trips by riding and walking
  • Increase the number of riding and walking trips throughout the week
  • Safe active street users, residents, and the wider community able to recognise safe active streets as safe and comfortable places to walk and ride.

The project will employ the following design elements to guide the concept design of infrastructure treatments:

  • Creating a 30km/h operating environment for vehicles through traffic calming treatments such as carriageway narrowing, red asphalt surface treatments, on-street parking bays with nibs, single lane angles slow points, road humps and raised intersections. Examples attached for information
  • Improving connectivity (by active transport) to local attractors
  • Addressing existing physical barriers to walking and bike riding along the route
  • Prioritising active travel modes to create a safe and continuous route for people riding and walking.

The City is consulting with the community on a proposed concept provided for download, seeking input on to finalise a concept design for the project. A document illustrating common examples of Safe active street treatments is also provided for information.
