Registering your pet

First-time pet registration

You can register your pet for one year, three years, or lifetime. All registrations expire on 31 October, regardless of when they were paid, as the registration year runs from 1 November to 31 October.

In WA, all dogs over three months and cats over six months must be registered. First-time registrations must complete an Application for Cat and Dog Registration form, you’ll be prompted to sign in or create an account with the City:

Dogs

  • All dogs aged three months and over must be registered with the City of Wanneroo and microchipped.
  • All dogs must wear both a registration tag and disc showing the owner’s name and address.
  • Households in residential areas are limited to two dogs.
  • Up to six dogs may be kept on a rural property (providing the rural property is over 4 hectares).
  • If your dog is sterilised, you will need to provide proof of sterilisation with the application form. A veterinary surgeon's certificate is the only proof that can be accepted if applying online.

Guide Dog/Assistance Dog

An assistance dog is one that helps manage the effects of a disability or medical condition. Assistance, Guide, and Training Dogs are exempt from registration fees and should be registered for life. To qualify, provide a certificate or letter from one of the following organisations - Assistance Dogs Australia, Lions Hearing Dogs, Seeing Eye Dogs, Royal Guide Dogs Association and VisAbility Limited.

Cats

Cats over six months must be registered, microchipped, and sterilised (proof required). Households may keep up to three cats.

*Pensioner concession of 50% applies to holders of:

  • A current Pensioner Concession card, or;
  • A Centrelink Commonwealth Seniors Health Card together with a Seniors Card, or;
  • A Department of Veteran Affairs Commonwealth Seniors Health Card together with a Seniors Card.

Transfer of Council

To transfer your pet’s registration from another council to the City of Wanneroo, complete the Transfer of Council Form:

Transfer pet ownership/registration to another owner

If your pet passes away

If your pet passes away, you will need to notify the City by completing the Notification of a Deceased Animal online form

Refunds may apply if:

  • The pet had lifetime registration and passed within three years
  • The original registration and payment were made to the City
  • You provide a vet letter or death certificate.

Apply to keep more than two dogs or three cats

Residential households may keep up to two dogs and three cats. Rural properties over four hectares may keep up to six dogs. To keep more pets than allowed, complete the online application form (sign-in required):
