About asbestos
Asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous mineral widely mined and used in building materials and products, was phased out in Australia through the 1980s and banned completely in 2003. Despite these measures, asbestos remains present in many older homes across Western Australia.
Asbestos is a cancer and lung disease hazard. Damaged asbestos products, such as those affected by fire, wind, or accidental damage, pose a significant danger as they are more likely to release fibres and contaminate surrounding soils and materials.
Handling, removal, and disposal of asbestos require strict precautions to mitigate health risks. For safe practices, refer to the following sections on the safe removal and disposal of asbestos.
Identifying asbestos
If you are planning property renovations or demolition, identifying any asbestos-containing materials beforehand is crucial before commencing any work.
For guidance on where asbestos is typically found and how to recognise it, visit the Department of Health’s webpage on asbestos in and around the home.
Removal of asbestos
We highly recommend hiring a licensed asbestos removalist to handle and remove asbestos safely.
Important note: If you decide to undertake the removal yourself, you are legally permitted to remove up to 10 square meters of asbestos only.
All individuals involved in handling and disposing of asbestos must adhere to the Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992.
For detailed guidance, including how to find a licensed asbestos removalist, refer to the Department of Health’s webpage on asbestos removal.
