Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes unwanted household products that contain chemicals or substances that can be harmful to you, your family, your pets, or the environment.
The HHW Program provides 13 facilities in WA for the public to safely drop off their hazardous materials for free. In the City of Wanneroo these include Tamala Park and Balcatta Recycling Centre. Wangara Greens Recycling Facility also accepts some of these materials.

SAFETY TIP
When dropping off chemicals and other hazardous liquid materials, do not mix together. Keep goods in their original containers if possible. Transport in the boot or rear of your vehicle and avoid keeping them in a hot car for too long.
How can HHW be harmful?
- Cause poisoning or severe burns if swallowed, inhaled or contacts skin
- React with other chemicals or heat and cause fire or toxic fumes
- Leak on the ground and contaminate the soil or groundwater
- Injure waste collectors if HHW is placed in household bins or out for verge collections
- Pollute the environment if it ends up in a landfill
Disposal of asbestos
Asbestos is accepted at Tamala Park for free every Sunday (conditions apply). Find out more from Mindarie Regional Council, who operate the facility, about preparing asbestos before arrival to ensure acceptance.

Problematic waste
Problematic waste refers to materials that are not accepted through the HHW Program and that require special disposal for safety or environmental reasons. These include:
- Electronic waste (e-waste)
- Mobile phones
- Explosives, ammunition and firearms
- Medications and pharmaceuticals
- Tyres
- Sharps / needles
- Printer cartridges and toners
- Motor oil
- Distress beacons (EPIRBs and PLB’s)
Some of these items can be dropped off to City owned locations such as Wangara Greens Recycling Facility or City libraries for free. Others can be taken to alternative drop-off facilities within the City and beyond. Please see our Drop-off facilities page for more information.
