Development Applications - Exemptions

Under the City’s District Planning Scheme No. 2 (DPS 2), there are a number of exemptions which apply, and do not require planning approval from the City. The following is a summary of the most common types of development which are exempt from approval:

  • The carrying out of internal work which does not affect the external appearance of the building;
  • The erection or extension of a Single House which is a ‘P’ permitted use within the zone, and complies with the relevant provisions of the Residential Design Codes (R-Codes), Local Development Plan (LDP), and/or DPS 2, where applicable.
  • The erection or extension of an ancillary accommodation, outbuildings, boundary wall or fence, patio, pergola, veranda, garage, carport or swimming pool which is a ‘P’ permitted use within the zone, and complies with the relevant provisions of the R-Codes, LDP and/or DPS 2 where applicable, and there is an approved Single House or Grouped Dwelling on the site;
  • The demolition of any structure;
  • Temporary works, which are in existence for less than 48 hours in total in a 12 month period; and
  • Signage which satisfies the requirements of the City’s Signs Local Planning Policy 4.6 (LPP 4.6).
