The City of Wanneroo Childhood and Youth Services team is a proud service provider for the City of Joondalup RYDE (Regional Youth Driver Education) program.
About the RYDE Program
The RYDE program gives young people aged 16 to 25 years the opportunity to complete their supervised driving hours with a volunteer driver.
RYDE provides driving sessions with volunteer mentors to help you complete logbook hours, not driving lessons or instruction.
RYDE Joondalup/Wanneroo only offers automatic driving sessions. However, these hours can still be used towards obtaining a manual licence.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the RYDE program, you will need to be:
- Aged 16 - 25 years.
- Have a learner’s permit.
- Can access Joondalup Library for all RYDE driving sessions.
- Our general suggestion is at least three formal lessons and other general driving prior to signing up with RYDE.
Costs
- Driving sessions cost $15 for a 90-minute booking and are to be paid using Credit/Debit Card or PayPal.
- A RYDE safety assessment cost of $80 (subject to change) to an external driving school.
How to join RYDE program
To participate in the program, follow these steps:
- Arrange a ‘signup’ appointment.
- Attend your sign-up appointment. Your Support Worker will set you up with an online account on the RYDE website. Please bring a valid Western Australian Learner’s permit, mobile phone and current email address (must be activated).
- Access your online RYDE account for information on the program and account details.
- Book a RYDE assessment with one of the partnered Driving Schools to evaluate basic safe driving skills.
- Purchase RYDE credits through your online account using Credit/Debit Card or PayPal.
- Book driving sessions online.
- Attend Joondalup Library located at 102 Boas Avenue for RYDE session.

Requirements prior to starting RYDE sessions
To participate:
- You must complete an initial assessment with a RYDE partnered Driving School (at your own expense) before booking RYDE sessions. This will confirm that you have the adequate skills to start your Mentor sessions. These can be done through, Best West Driving School: services northern suburbs or Road Rules Driving: services Perth city to Balga area.
- Once initial assessment is complete, you can start booking you RYDE sessions (90 minute session) and costs the Learner Driver $15 (paid online).
- RYDE sessions start and finish at the Joondalup Library. Learners and Volunteer Mentors meet here to inspect the vehicle before commencing the session.
- You are able to view information about the Mentor assigned to each session, allowing you to choose between female and male mentors.
