The City of Wanneroo is the first local government to claim more than $1million worth of sporting vouchers to help local children take part in sport.

The Department of Sport and Recreation KidSport program helps contribute up to $200 towards club fees for WA children between five and 18-years-old.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City was proud to be the first local government to hit the million dollar mark since the program began in 2011.

“The City’s participation in the program has grown from 37 vouchers in 2011 to more than 2000 in 2015 – that’s a considerable achievement,” she said.

Mayor Roberts said the positive nature of the program and the enthusiasm of local clubs helped the participation rates climb over the past four years.

“The City distributed its 6000 voucher only last month, 4000 of those were for single child registrations,” she said,

“More than 35 per cent of those children had never registered with a club before, which is a great sign of effective community engagement.

“With such a variety of cultures and abilities within our City, programs like KidSport help break the divide and bring communities together through sport.”

The KidSport program won the 2014 Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Strengthening Families and Communities category.
