Street art adds a splash of colour to community centre

Perth artist Hayley Welsh has worked with Butler Primary School students to create an eye-catching mural at the Butler Community Centre to establish a sense of place.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said community artwork creates a wonderful sense of place and
makes the community more vibrant.

“This mural is a great way for the students to foster a sense of ownership and pride in their
local area and a feeling of respect for the places that surround them,” she said.

Over a one day workshop, Hayley worked with the Year 6 students to brainstorm ideas
behind ‘what a community centre means to us’, and the end result was the creative
installation of the mural design.

Hayley taught the students how to create their own artistic sketches, and together they
discovered ideas linked to inclusion, sharing, friendship and accepting others.

The project enabled the students to get hands on and watch the artwork come to life, while
also demonstrating their ideas are valued and the kind of impact their creativity can have on
the local community.

To celebrate the opening of the mural, the City of Wanneroo has organised a launch that
includes an interactive workshop for the students and an afternoon tea as a thank you for
their involvement.

The launch, which is open to the general public and will be held on Friday 26 February at
3:30pm, will include food trucks and will display the posters completed by the students
during the workshop.

The students will also have an opportunity to paint stones to be incorporated into the planned garden and seating area around the mural.
