The Western Australian Heritage Awards acknowledges the outstanding contribution of individuals and organisations in preserving Western Australia’s heritage.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the awards showcase excellence in conservation and revitalising
of heritage places. The City of Wanneroo is incredibly proud that Cockman House, in
Woodvale, has been chosen as one of four finalists in the ‘Interpretation Project’ category.

“The awards are in their 24th year and recognise the diversity of heritage projects across our state and being selected as a finalist is a wonderful honour.

“The City’s oldest remaining residence, Cockman House, holds a sentimental and special
place in Wanneroo’s rich history as the home of one of the earliest settler families. It was built by James Cockman and finished in 1860.

Cockman House is listed on the State Heritage Register, has been in the City’s care since
1987 and operated as a museum since 1989, providing a unique opportunity for teachers
and students to experience what life was like in our pioneering times.

“The City’s Pioneers helped build Wanneroo, they were the doers and the achievers who
shaped the City’s culture, fabric and community and recognition of Cockman House as a
finalist is a fantastic reminder of what those hardworking residents achieved and the family’s descendants are valued members of our community,” she said.

The 2016 WA Heritage Awards night will be held on Thursday 31 March, 6 - 8.30pm, at the
former Hale House, which is now the Office of the Premier and Cabinet in West Perth.
