Be on the lookout for destructive beetle

Published Thursday, 18th August 2016

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia is asking industrial area businesses and nearby residents to be on the lookout for a serious wood-boring pest, called Asian longhorned beetle

Beetle

A single beetle was found in an industrial warehouse in Osborne Park last month, and DAFWA is carrying out surveillance to determine if this was a one-off detection. This beetle can destroy hardwood trees such as elm, willow, poplar, maple, Plane trees and a variety of fruit trees.

Asian longhorned beetle is not found anywhere in Australia, and is most likely to arrive in imported timber and wood packaging from Asia or North America. Businesses and residents can help with surveillance by knowing how to recognise Asian longhorned beetle and reporting any suspect finds to DAFWA.

Go to agric.wa.gov.au/asianlonghornedbeetle for more information. Information sheets are also available from your local government office.

Report any suspect finds to DAFWA’s Pest and Disease Information Service on 1800 084 881, or go to the mypestguide web page to download the free mypestguide reporter app or make an online report.

By joining the MyPestGuide reporting community you can report any suspect pests at any time. Use the app to send an image to DAFWA for identification and experts will respond directly to your phone.
