Published Monday, 12th September 2016

Wanneroo residents and art lovers the world over can now appreciate the City’s rich artistic heritage from the comfort of their own homes.

Piece of art

The City of Wanneroo’s new online Art Collection delivers an easy way to view artworks that have been acquired by the City over the past 66 years.

The online collection is grouped into categories including ceramics/glass, collectibles (functional), digital art, drawing, indigenous (all media), mixed media, painting, pastels, photography, printmaking, sculpture and textiles.

The City is committed to keeping the art collection well maintained, interpreted and promoted as well as ensuring that residents and visitors get regular opportunities to enjoy the collection.

There are some 250 artworks in the collection, ranging from traditional watercolour homestead themes to an origami-inspired sculpture created from recycled aluminium cans.

The most highly valued artwork in the collection is a Robert Juniper painting entitled Christmas Trees on the Bay Track.

An interesting feature is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander component which has 22 items, including examples of a yawkyawk - an Australian Aboriginal water spirit that looks like a woman with a fish's tail; and other artefacts and natural ochre paintings. Highly prized is an etching by Queenie McKenzie, a confident and prolific painter who lived her whole life in Texas Downs, a homestead in northeast Western Australia area.

The collection also features wonderful local northern suburbs artists like Alan Muller, Cindy Lane, Susan Hoy, Corinne Scott, Janey Emery, Suzi Logue, Angie Beck, Christopher Young, Jennifer Sadler, Elisa Markes-Young, C. Glen Hughes, Jeremy Kirwan-Ward, Helen Smith, Susan Payne and Judy Rogers.

Also added to the collection each year is the winner of the City’s popular Community Art Awards & Exhibition. In 2016, Andy Quilty’s Papa #3 was a great acquisition for the collection.
